All the major designers have been showcasing an eighties vibe by using strong vibrant colours creating the trend that is being called block colour. But what does that mean to you and how can you get on-trend.
Well the primary factor is the colour, and the hottest colour for 2010 is definitely electric blue – the stronger and more vibrant the better. Cobalt through to indigo blue, there are many ways to wear it and make the most of this trend including:
Tights – make the most of this cold snap and showcase your fabulous pins with bright vibrant tights, the best shades to demonstrate your fashion focus are purple, electric blue and green. Worn with simple black jersey dress – but you absolutely must accessories with bold statement jewellery in matching vibrant shades.
Tops – solid and strong colours, again if you can work cobalt blue into your wardrobe, and if you can mix your textures up too – so a fabulous long tunic dress in satin-effect cobalt blue but teamed with black leather jacket, but remember to keep the tights and shoes black, the eye should be drawn to the single block. With this you need to keep the accessories bold too, maybe a bright blue bangle and black statement necklace.
Multiblock – this is much in evidence on the catwalks, with Alexander Wang wrap dress with stripes of block colour being seen on celebs like Diane Kruger and Lindsay Lohan this season. It is a harder look to pull off as it is all about the one piece. If you are a bit frightened of so much colour, after a winter of black and grey, then the trick is to take a big breath and go for it, the brighter the colours the better for Spring. The horizontal blocks work well for the slimmer figure, but for those with womanly curves we’d recommend sticking to the darker shades around the hips. Topshop has a great homage to catwalk favourites this year, and comes at a snip of the catwalk price. The accessorising tip with multiblock is to keep it simple but bold, so just one piece, maybe a large cocktail ring or fabulous diamante hair accessory.
The great thing with this trend is that it looks like it will last through spring and into summer, and is flexible enough to flatter all shapes and sizes, you can go for the colours that best suit your complexion and have fun… colour is back!
